The Bettendorf Veterans Memorial is a lasting tribute to the men and women who served our country honorably or who now are on active duty. A place of reflection, pride and solace, the Memorial was conceived and built.
They left their families and friends behind. They honored commitment to serve. They were willing to sacrifice their lives to protect the freedom that others before them fought to preserve. We needed a memorial to honor these men and women and so the Bettendorf Veterans Memorial was conceived and built.
The design features a pentagon that surrounds a central flag. On the pentagon are five marble stones, each containing the insignia of the five branches of service. The memorial currentyl contains two outer rings, the first holding five black marbles pillars. The outer ring currently contains three additional pillars and footing for five more pillars as more names are added. Each pillar contains 116 names.
Each veteran's information is sand blasted into the pillar on two lines. The first line lists the veteran's name and may be followed by MIA, POW or KIA if desired. The second line is for the veteran's branch affiliation and date served, or war / conflict designation.
The cost to add a name to the memorial has always been $125.00. This is the average cost to add a name to the memorial. We want to keep the cost as low as possible to ensure that cost does not prohibit a veteran or the veteran's family from honoring their veteran on our memorial. We do have a small fund to help with the cost if needed. This does not give us any additional funds for additional pillars or maintenance and repair costs.
Since this memorial will be maintained and expanded in perpetuity, the Bettendorf Veterans Memorial Committee has agreed to start an endowment to financially support the memorial for future generations of veterans and their families. Our goal is to build up the funds in order to generate, through earning only, the funds necessary to improve, expand and maintain this memorial in the manner fitting for our local heroes.
The Bettendorf Veterans Memorial would not have been possible without the support of the City of Bettendorf, the Bettendorf Park Board and Staff, the Bettendorf V.F.W., American Legion, Vietnam Veterans of America, adn the generous financial commitment from local organizations and members of the community. *There is a donor stone at the memorial listing the many supportive organziations and people.
