The Midwest Writing Center was incorporated in Iowa in 1980 with a mission to foster appreciation of the written word and to support and educate its creators. With the generous support of our community each year programming and numbers served have increased.
MWC felt that having an endowment fund would help insure the continuation of our organization and mission. When the opportunity was available to receive matching funds from the Riverboat Development Authority and the CFGRB we felt we needed to try to raise the required matching funds. We were successful and have continued to increase our endowment through the generosity of our supporters.
We use the endowment spendable balance for operating costs. Operating costs are the most difficult funds to secure so these funds are very important to our small organization.
Here at MWC, we recognize donors with a personal letter of thanks, on our website, and at celebratory events (Literary Awards Banquet).
We do not have a stated amount goal for the endowment, but we do hope to continue to increase the endowment through annual gifts and bequests. We are aware of a few individuals who have the Midwest Writing Center as part of their estate plan, and are excited and grateful for their gifts.
Each year, over 700 young people in our community are exposed to professional writers and writing instructors through these three programs. In addition, there were nearly 3,000 total instances of service to all members of the community in 2012.
